Martin has handled almost every issue impacting the food industry. He has a comprehensive understanding of the laws affecting the labeling and advertising of foods, dietary supplements, infant formulas, medical foods, and foods for special dietary use. He helps anticipate new trends and develops the data needed to distinguish a client’s products from others on the market. Martin uses his understanding of science and technology in the food industry to provide assistance in obtaining regulatory authorizations to market new food ingredients, food packaging materials, and dietary ingredients. He assists in responding to proposed regulations and draft guidance to keep clients informed on the latest trends in class action law suits to help anticipate new regulatory initiatives.
Martin grew up on a farm and worked in food processing plants before going to law school. His hands-on experience in the field and degree in food technology allow him to better understand the challenges his clients face in complying with the laws impacting food manufacturing.

Founder and Principal of Food Directions, Beth Johnson brings over 25 years of food policy experience serving inside and outside the government, including the Food and Drug Administration, US Department of Agriculture, Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, and the National Restaurant Association, where she built strong relationships with a broad group of stakeholders and a unique and in-depth understanding of how industry can impact policy decisions. Over the years, Johnson has been involved in policy negotiations and development at the local, state, federal and international level. Alexis Settineri is a Senior Food Policy Manager at Food Directions where she currently leads the advancement of food policy priorities for US trade associations and food companies across the supply chain. She has over 8 years of experience representing the food industry in the evolving regulatory landscape in Washington DC. Previously, she served as Manager of Communications at the American Frozen Food Institute where she helped communicate scientific and retail market insights for the frozen food industry. Alexis currently lives in Washington DC and earned her undergraduate degrees in nutritional sciences and Spanish from The Pennsylvania State University.

Successfully navigating the detailed and often complex regulatory issues confronting the food industry, Elizabeth Fawell helps companies understand both the rules and various risks involved to make the most informed and strategic decisions.
Elizabeth has worked with every segment of the food industry, including manufacturers, distributors, retailers, restaurants, and food service operators, as well as their trade associations.
Her work on behalf of food industry clients with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) since its inception and her understanding of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems provides her with the experience and perspective needed to counsel clients on how to comply with new requirements under the law. Elizabeth is also a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) and has completed the FSPCA PCQI training.
Elizabeth understands how laws, regulations, and guidance documents are developed, interpreted, and enforced. Her extensive knowledge enables clients to prevent or respond to enforcement actions such as Warning Letters, Import Alerts, and agency investigations. Dr. Schmit is a Senior Director of Scientific Affairs at PepsiCo, Inc., where he leads the functional support of new innovation and delivering the external scientific strategy for North America and Latin America. He received his bachelor’s degree in genetics (2004) and doctorate in Toxicology (2010) from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and was a postdoctoral fellow also at UW-Madison from 2010 to 2014. Dr. Schmit is a board-certified toxicologist as a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicologists and is a member of both the Society of Toxicology and the Toxicology Forum. In his litigation, counseling, and government advocacy practice, Trent resolves scientific and technical disputes involving consumer protection, advertising, environmental, and food and drug law, with an emphasis on the unique requirements of California law.
He brings over 30 years’ experience with regulators, prosecutors, activists, bounty hunters, and plaintiffs’ lawyers to defend clients and provide practical perspectives on litigation avoidance. Danielle Stempel
Senior Associate, Hogan Lovells
As a senior associate in our Appellate practice, Danielle Desaulniers Stempel focuses on appellate litigation in federal and state courts. Her experience spans a range of topics, including administrative, patent, antitrust, energy, health care, constitutional, and criminal law. Danielle has briefed cases at every level of the federal judiciary, including six merits cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as in state intermediate courts and courts of last resort. She has argued multiple cases, including before the Third Circuit, Fifth Circuit, and Maryland Supreme Court.
Danielle maintains a robust pro bono practice. She served as a Special Attorney for the State of Minnesota in the prosecution of the four former police officers charged in connection with the death of George Floyd. Danielle has also represented clients in reproductive justice cases, and in challenging the Family Separation Policy, the federal government’s lethal injection protocol, and the male-only military draft requirement.
Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Danielle clerked for Judge Diana Gribbon Motz of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and Judge Thomas B. Griffith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. While attending the University of Virginia School of Law, she served as the Editor in Chief of the Virginia Law Review and was a finalist in the Lile Moot Court competition. Danielle Dalheim, RD has been with PepsiCo for 18 years and is currently the Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs for PepsiCo US. In her role Danielle leads US regulatory compliance for the entire PepsiCo Foods and Beverages portfolio, ensuring that products are compliant with all FDA regulations and have accurate ingredient and nutrition information. Her team is responsible for substantiating a wide variety of claims from gluten free, to protein, to hydration and non-GMO. Danielle also represents PepsiCo with external organizations such as the Consumer Brands Association as they provide input to future FDA and USDA regulations.
Prior to joining PepsiCo in 2007, Danielle received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition Science from the University of Oklahoma. She is a registered dietitian and member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Wendy Reinhardt Kapsak, MS, RDN is President and CEO of the International Food Information Council (IFIC), a nonprofit 501c(3) research and education foundation focused on effectively communicating science-based information about food safety, nutrition, and sustainable food systems, serving the public good.
Prior to joining IFIC, Wendy served as the President and CEO of the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) (now known as the Foundation for Fresh Produce). At PBH, she guided the Foundation’s efforts with hundreds of public and private partners to advance fruit and vegetable consumption for happier, healthier lives. Under her leadership and through a two-year transformation, the organization launched the Have A Plant® Movement in 2019, which today inspires millions of consumers to eat and enjoy more fruits and vegetables every day.
From 2012 to 2016, Reinhardt Kapsak held multiple leadership positions in the Food, Nutrition & Health Partnerships as well as Corporate Engagement verticals at what is now known as Bayer Crop Science. While in these roles, her efforts focused on connecting the food, nutrition, culinary, and agriculture communities for greater understanding, collaboration, and innovation.
Wendy returned to IFIC after a previous tenure from 2000–2012, including service as Senior Director, Health & Wellness.
