SNAC International Urges Quick Action on Roberts-Stabenow GMO Agreement

June 23, 2016

SNAC International President & CEO Tom Dempsey today praised Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts for his leadership in introducing a bipartisan agreement to establish national standards for disclosure of food produced with genetically modified ingredients (GMOs). "Today's agreement between Chairman Roberts and Ranking Member Stabenow is an important step in the path to ensuring that our snack producers are not burdened by a patchwork of state labeling laws that would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to comply with, and ultimately raise food prices for Americans."

Dempsey encouraged both the Senate and House of Representatives to act quickly to prevent the impending patchwork of state laws from taking effect. "While the latest proposal differs from the approach passed by the House of Representatives in July 2015, it achieves our primary goal: federal preemption to prevent a patchwork of conflicting state labeling laws. It also provides consistency to consumers.  The new proposal provides options for companies to disclose information in a way that does not stigmatize a safe and proven technology. I encourage both the Senate and House to act swiftly before the entire food supply chain is disrupted by Vermont's labeling law."
